Cancer Comfort

Everyone needs comfort.

Everyone needs comfort. Especially those struggling with cancer – which seems to be everywhere. It invades our homes and families without thought to the havoc it reeks. Spouses, children, siblings, relatives, friends. My brother. My daughter. My friend in Jiu Jitsu class. It seems I am suddenly surrounded by people who have – or have had – cancer.

When I sat with my daughter during a chemo infusion, I discovered it was damn cold in that room. So I made her a quilt. Then I made one for my friend. Then I made one to donate to Project 31, a breast cancer support group. Then I was asked to participate in a fund raiser for the Cancer Specialists and Research Center. So I made more quilts for the fund raiser.

I realized that there were others who needed the warmth of a quilt during infusions. Others who needed to be reminded they were not alone. That this freaking roller coaster ride is a chapter, not their whole story. That there can be happiness and joy in the midst of the fight. That rainbows follow the rain and the stars shine in the darkness. In these quilts, you will find humor (I Can. I will. Here, hold my beer.), empowerment (I Never Give up. I Never Give in. I stand and fight.), faith (When you go through the deep waters, I am with you.), uplifting statements (I am a Warrior. A Champion. A Victor. I am a Survivor.) and sometimes just the acknowledgment of their effort (Sometimes living is an act of courage.)
